BLR.PETA.3.100609.RRA flock of animal-rights activists dressed as chickens descended on NBC Studios Tuesday to shame Jay Leno into dropping McDonald’s from a planned promotion.

Flapping their wings and hoisting signs that read “McDonald’s: Nothing But Cruelty,” and “McCruelty: I’m Hatin’ It,” protesters with the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals lined a stretch of Bob Hope Drive as “The Jay Leno Show” prepared to unveil a promotion for McDonald’s Monopoly contest.

PETA, the world’s largest animal rights organization, announced plans to dress up in chicken costumes for a demonstration outside a taping of “The Jay Leno Show.”

The group is feuding with Leno over an in-show promotion featuring McDonald’s Monopoly-related contest.

PETA is asking Leno to use his influence to benefit the millions of birds who end up as McNuggets, PETA officials said statement.

“McDonald’s still allows its U.S. suppliers to cut chickens’ throats while they are still conscious and even scald birds to death in defeathering tanks,” wrote Dan Mathews, PETA senior vice president. “We hope that you’ll use your unique position to urge McDonald’s to adopt the more humane chicken-slaughter standards already in place in Europe.”

The protest is scheduled for 2:30 p.m. outside the Burbank studio.

Leno premiere is hot and cold

with one comment

The Jay Leno experiment got off to a hot start, according to preliminary ratings numbers for the host’s new primetime show.

The Burbank-based show has concerned industry experts who fear it may result in a chain reaction of networks opting for low-cost talk shows rather than spending money on scripted dramas to fill weeknight spots. That could mean fewer jobs and more industry unemployment, they say.

The premiere episode of “The Jay Leno Show” had some added intrigue because of an appearance by Kanye West, who made a fool of himself at MTV’s Video Music Awards the night before.

Still, the show got sterile reviews from critics who said it was awfully familiar to what they had previously seen from NBC’s favorite big-chinned star, despite prior network promises of innovation.  Read the rest of this entry »

Joan McCarthy, community outreach coordinator for the Walt Disney Co., brought a big check to the Burbank Unified School District Board of Education meeting Thursday, both physically and financially.

The company’s $50,000 donation was printed onto a large, photo-friendly check.

The only problem: no one had a camera.

McCarthy had given her presentation to the board, telling them how excited Disney was to offer the check to the district to fund a scoreboard at Memorial Field and Supt. Kevin Jolly had approached the podium to thank her and shake her hand.

Board President Dave Kemp did the same. Read the rest of this entry »

Jay Leno today took members of the print media on a tour through his new-and-improved studio where designers and stagehands were busy preparing for the Sept. 14 primetime premiere of “The Jay Leno Show.”

Our story will appear in Thursday’s News-Press and is slated for Saturday’s Leader. I got some one-on-one time with the king of late night and we chatted about the new show, working in Burbank and the runaway production phenomenon.

On the show: “We’re not doing a talk show we’re doing a straight comedy show. So they’ll be a lot more comedy in it. The monologue will stay the same, Jay Walking will stay the same. People like Headlines. But instead of having a second or third guest, as you would on ‘The Tonight Show,’ we’ll have comedy segments here.”

On his decision: “They said ‘We’d like you to do this.’ OK, I’d like to do it, it’s fun. I like being in Burbank. I don’t want to go to Universal City. I don’t want to be on an amusement park lot.” Read the rest of this entry »

Jay Leno, the late-night leader for more than a dozen years, is set to make history with the premiere of “The Jay Leno Show,” the first-ever entertainment program of its kind to be stripped across primetime on broadcast network television.

NBC announced today that Leno will welcome Jay-Z, Kanye West and Rihanna to kickoff the new comedy series Sept. 14. The superstar trio will perform “Run This Town,” from (retired hip-hop king) Jay-Z’s new album “The Blueprint 3.”

Leno, who reportedly looked relaxed and trim at the Television Critics Association on Wednesday, said a race track is being built near NBC’s Burbank studio for a regular “green car challenge” that will allow celebrities to race electric vehicles. (Still waiting on my invite to his hangar/car shop/museum out at Bob Hope Airport.)
