Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger’s speech Tuesday at John Burroughs High School came just hours after President Obama implored students across the country to set goals and aim high.

And despite protests from several Republican leaders and conservative groups, who said the speech amounted to “indoctrination,” Schwarzenegger called it a “good idea” for the president to address the nation’s schoolchildren.

“I wish that when I was in Austria that I had presidents and political leaders come to our classroom and talk about what was the secret for their success and so on,” he said, calling Obama a “good example, I think, [of someone] who came from nothing and worked his way up … against all odds.”

Is Williams the next big Burroughs running back?

football

Burroughs High running back Dalton Williams.

The Burroughs High football program has had some potent running backs over the past decade.

Standouts like Dominique Barnes, Joe Wiggan, Thomas Kyle and Mike Perez have racked up the yardage, broken records and earned their share of accolades.

Could another running back be ready to add his name to the list?

Unfortunately, the Indians lost their most potent offensive weapon to graduation from a year ago. Last season, All-Area and All-CIF Southern Section standout running back Dominique Barnes broke records and powered the squad’s offense.

Barnes — the Pacific League Offensive Player of the Year — rushed for 2,001 yards in 231 carries (8.7 yards a carry) and had 29 touchdowns. He is the first Indian to break the 2,000-yard mark and his career total of 3,078 put him second on the all-time list behind Kyle (3,309). He also set a single-game rushing record (304 yards) and scored 174 points, breaking the single-season record.

Losing Barnes might give Burroughs Coach Keith Knoop reason to worry. However, he said the team has an outstanding running back this season in senior Dalton Williams (5 feet 11, 195 pounds). Read the rest of this entry »

Burbank Vikings vital to the success of local high school programs

The Burbank Vikings are celebrating their 40th year.

The Burbank Vikings are celebrating their 40th year.

Look at any successful high school football program in Southern California and it’s likely the team benefits from a strong local youth feeder program.

A fine example of this can been seen in the Santa Clarita Valley. Successful programs in the area, namely Hart, Canyon, Saugus and Valencia, have had the luxury of drawing from a number of feeder programs in the community.

Locally, the well being of the Burbank Vikings Youth Tackle Football program is vital to the success to the area’s high schools: Burroughs, Burbank and Bellarmine-Jefferson. Read the rest of this entry »

Travor Campbell

Trevor Campbell

Burroughs High junior boys’ tennis player Trevor Campbell has pulled off an impressive double.

He is the first athlete in the region to earn All-Area player of the year honors in singles and doubles in their career.

This past season, he teamed up with sophomore teammate Robert Henry to win the 2009 All-Area Doubles Team of the Year award. As a freshman, Campbell was named the 2007 All-Area Singles Player of the year.

Normally a singles player, he was paired up with Henry late in the season. The two went on to win a Pacific League championship and advance to the Round of 16 in the CIF Southern Sectional Individual Tournament.

The past two weeks, Campbell has won age-group tournament titles, winning the Lakewood Open and the La Canada-Flintridge Open.

Campbell will return to Burroughs this fall for his senior season.

Why is Western Nelson missing from All-Area list?

Burroughs High's Western Nelson finishes ahead of Zack Torres of CV in the state meet.

Burroughs High's Western Nelson finishes ahead of Zack Torres of CV in CIF finals.

Looking at this year’s All-Area Track and Field list, one successful local star’s name is missing from the boys’ group.

Burroughs High senior Western Nelson had a successful season in 2009. He advanced to the CIF-State Track and Field Championships in the boys’ 3,200 meters, finishing 16th in 9:06.68. He also set the school record in the event (9:04.19).

But the All-Area list is based on times alone. All-Area Boys’ Athlete of the Year Zack Torres of Crescenta Valley also advanced to the state meet in the 3,200. He was even beat in the final race by Nelson. However, Torres’  season-best time was 9:02.5, besting Nelson’s mark and giving him the All-Area nod in the event.
