Can any local team win a CIF championship in 2009-10?

With the 2009-10 high school sports year set to begin in less than a month, teams are getting ready for the upcoming campaign.

However, do any of the local squads from Burroughs, Burbank, Bellarmine-Jefferson and Providence highs have what it takes to win a coveted CIF Southern Section championship?

With the Bell-Jeff girls’ basketball team winning a CIF crown last season, it marked  just the third championship by an area team in 34 years. Two of those title came from the Guards’ girls’ hoop team.

After enjoying a fine summer, Bell-Jeff, which also won a state title in 2009, looks to have the best chance of earning its second straight championship.

Are there any other teams that could make a run at a CIF crown? We’ll have to wait and see.
